Instruction at the workstation (werkplekinstructie)
Updated
Short answer
A werkplekinstructie is instruction given at the workstation itself: how this task is done here, what can go wrong at this post and which measures protect the worker. Dutch law requires it through Arbowet art. 8; in Belgium, Codex art. I.2-21 asks for training aimed at the workstation, at hiring and whenever the work changes.
The word and the duty
A werkinstructie is a document; a werkplekinstructie is the instruction given at the place where the work happens. In the Netherlands, Arbowet art. 8 requires that workers are effectively informed about the work and its risks, receive instruction adapted to their own tasks, and that the employer supervises compliance. In Belgium, Codex art. I.2-21 requires sufficient and adapted training aimed specifically at the workstation or function, given in particular at hiring, at a transfer or change of function, when equipment is new or changed and when new technology arrives, and repeated as risks evolve.
What a good one contains
Four things: the task as it is done at this post, the risks at this post, the measures that control them (guards, protective equipment, how to stop safely), and a record of who instructed whom and when. The instructor shows, the worker does it, the instructor watches and corrects.
Where it breaks
Instruction is given once when a line starts and not again when a machine is changed, or reaches the day shift but not the night shift. The guide to machine safety instruction across plants covers those triggers, and the pillar on workplace instruction law sets both countries side by side.
