Training for

Training for housekeepers

A housekeeper spends almost the whole shift out of sight of anyone who could correct her. She works to a time standard, in a fixed sequence, with chemicals, with her colleagues on other floors, often in a language that is not her first, and in many Benelux properties through an agency rather than on the property's payroll. Every one of those conditions changes what instruction has to do.

One person, one room, and a clock

The constraint is not difficulty. The tasks are simple. The constraint is that they are performed alone, at pace, and repeatedly.

Alone means nobody sees a shortcut being taken, so a deviation on day three is a habit by week two. At pace means anything slower than the shortcut loses unless the person understands why it is there. Inspecting the room afterwards does not fix that: by then only the result is visible. Instruction is the only point where you influence the method rather than judge the outcome.

The sequence is the procedure

The room standard is usually written as a list of things that must be true when the housekeeper leaves. That is a specification, not an instruction.

What she needs is order: strip first, ventilate, bathroom before bedroom, high before low, clean cloth per zone, replenish, final check from the doorway. That order makes the time standard achievable and keeps the bathroom away from the glassware. Two housekeepers can both produce a room that passes inspection while one works in a sequence that will eventually produce a complaint.

So the unit of instruction is the sequence, not the checklist, taught as one flow with the reason attached at the two or three points where it is not obvious.

What is in the caddy carries an instruction duty

The trolley holds concentrates, disinfectants, descalers and a sprayer, and the housekeeper decides dilution, contact time, ventilation and which product goes where.

The general duty covers this. Belgian Codex art. I.2-21 requires sufficient and appropriate training on welzijn op het werk aimed at the worker's werkpost or function, at entry into service, on a change of function, and when new work equipment is introduced, during working time and not at the worker's expense. A new product on the trolley is that trigger. In the Netherlands, Arbowet art. 8 lid 2 requires instruction that is effective and adapted to the worker's distinct tasks, and art. 8 lid 4 requires the employer to supervise compliance with it.

Neither is chemical-specific, and we will not cite anything that is, because we have no verified source for it. Take the product-specific requirements from your supplier documentation and your preventieadviseur or arbodienst. What these articles settle is timing and ownership: instruction before use, redone when the product changes, compliance checked rather than assumed.

The question she cannot ask anybody

In a kitchen an uncertain worker asks the person next to them. On the fourth floor at eleven the alternatives are to guess or to walk down and find a supervisor, which costs minutes against a room target.

So instruction has to be available at the moment of doubt, not only at induction, which means it lives on a phone rather than in a folder in the linen room. It has to be short enough to consult mid-room. And it has to be in her own language, because someone who half-understands a dilution instruction will not go looking for clarification, they will decide.

In Belgium the property instructs, not the agency

Where housekeeping runs on agency staff, the Belgian position is unambiguous and frequently misread. Codex art. X.2-11 places on the gebruiker, or the designated member of the hierarchical line, the duty to give each agency worker the information on the risks of the werkpost, the safety instructions specific to it, and appropriate training in line with art. I.2-21. The agency handles selection and its own sections of the werkpostfiche. The instruction on the floor is the property's.

In the Netherlands the inlener counts as employer under the Arbowet, so art. 8 sits in the same place, with the doorgeleidingsplicht in art. 5 lid 5 running the risk description from inlener to uitlener to worker before work starts. Either way: if your housekeeping is agency-staffed and your property holds no record of what it instructed, the record does not exist anywhere.

Delivering it to a phone in a corridor

The same isolation applies to incidents: a sharps find, an unexpected guest, a spill she cannot identify. She needs to know who she calls before any of those happen.

Aristotl converts the room standard, the product sheets and the incident procedure into three to five minute courses a housekeeper completes on her own phone, translated per person, with a knowledge check on the steps that carry risk. When the standard or a product changes, only that module goes out. The dashboard shows per property, per role and per version who has completed what, including agency staff, and exports the record with the person, the version and the date on it.

Take one room type and one product

Bring the room standard for one room type and the sheet for a chemical you introduced recently. We will build both into the form a housekeeper actually gets, and show you the record it produces.
