Employee app vs training platform

Updated

Short answer

Choose an employee app when the problem is that frontline staff miss news, updates and each other. Choose a training platform when people must be able to carry out a procedure and you must show, per site, who can. Both reach staff on their phones, so they overlap; the difference is whether you need a record of ability.

Employee apps and training platforms are often shortlisted against each other because both promise to reach the people who never sit at a desk. They solve different problems, and the quickest way to choose is to name the problem first.

What an employee app is for

An employee communication app gives frontline staff what office staff get from email and the intranet: company news, updates from their site, a way to talk to colleagues, often a staff directory, surveys and recognition. The measure of success is reach and engagement: did people see the update, did they respond, do they feel part of the organisation.

If your problem is that people on the floor find out about changes last, or only through a private chat group, an employee app is built for it.

What a training platform is for

A training platform starts from what people must be able to do. The content is a procedure, a safety rule or a changed way of working, delivered as a short module with a check, and the output is a record: who has the current version, per site and per version.

That record is what law and standards ask about. The Belgian Codex (art. I.2-21) requires training aimed at the workstation or function, the Dutch Arbowet (art. 8) instruction adapted to each worker's tasks, and food safety standards such as IFS Food ask for training records and proof that training worked. A message that was opened does not answer those questions.

Two overlapping areas. Employee app: news and updates, chat and a staff directory, surveys and recognition. Training platform: modules built from your procedures, a check each person passes, a record per site and version. In the overlap: reaching staff on a phone, organised by site or team.
Both reach frontline staff on a phone. Only one is built to show who can do the job.

Deciding which problem you have

Ask what went wrong last time something changed. If people did not know about it, that is a communication problem. If they knew but did it the old way, or you could not show who had been instructed, that is a training problem. Many organisations have both, and the two tools can run side by side, as long as one of them owns the procedures.

Before you choose

  • Write down the last change that went wrong, and whether people did not know or could not do it.
  • List what you would have to show an auditor or a client for one site.
  • Decide which tool owns procedures, so a change never lives in two places.
  • Pilot with one real procedure change on one site.

Where Aristotl fits

Aristotl is a training platform first. It turns the procedures you already keep into 3-5 minute modules with a knowledge check, in each person's language, and shows completion per site and version. It also has a feed for updates to sites and teams: an announcement can ask each person to confirm they have read and understood it, and the sender sees who has confirmed. For a culture and engagement programme, an employee app remains the specialist.

Frequently asked questions

For news, yes. For a procedure people must be able to carry out, a message that was opened is not the same as a person who can do the step. If you need to show that, per person and per site, you need a check and a record.

Only for the part that overlaps. A training platform is not built to be the social space of a company, with chat, a staff directory or recognition. If staff engagement is the goal, an employee app does that job.

Yes. Alongside training, Aristotl has a feed where managers post updates to their sites and teams, in each reader's language. An announcement can ask each person to confirm they have read and understood it, and the sender sees who has confirmed.
